Zahlreiche NGOs aus verschiedenen Ländern beteiligen sich neben der Kuestenwache und EU-Grenzschutzagentur Frontex an Einsaetzen zur Seenotrettung. Von der turkischen Küste zur Insel Lesbos verlaeuft eine Hauptfluchtroute nach Europa.
